Sourdough & Rustic Breads / Starters

Here we have a staple dish for any avid cook or baker - the SOURDOUGH. This is a naturally leavened bread that is one of if not the oldest type of bread we know , dating back to 3700 BC. This bread doesn’t use commercial yeast to rise, instead it uses what is called a “starter” which is a fermented flour and water mixture that contains wild yeast and good bacteria. This provides a tangy flavour and a slightly chewy texture. Not all sourdoughs are the same and once you delve into the world of starters and sourdoughs the possibilities are quite endless! It all boils down to preference; you can create a super sour/tangy bread or you may lean to a more milder, well balanced flavour of sourdough.
